Advocacy & Justice Clinic to Celebrate 30th Anniversary by Recognizing Pro Bono Excellence

May 15, 2024

The D.C. 酒吧 Pro Bono Center’s Advocacy & Justice Clinic will host a 30th Anniversary Celebration on October 1, 2024, when eight law firms and the Federal Government Pro Bono Program will be honored with the prestigious Stephen J. Pollak Pro Bono Award. The award is named in memory of Steve Pollak, a leader in the Washington D.C. legal community and ardent supporter of the Pro Bono Center for decades.

Pollak’s leadership of the D.C. 酒吧’s Public Service Activities Review Committee in the early 1990s led to the creation of the Advocacy & Justice Clinic, the Pro Bono Center’s flagship legal clinic. Since its inception, the Advocacy & Justice Clinic has provided more than 9,000 District of Columbia residents living on low incomes with pro bono counsel in their family, housing, and public benefits appeal matters.

Recipients of the Stephen J. Pollak Pro Bono Award were selected from the Advocacy & Justice Clinic’s original founding members based on their commitment to pro bono representation and their continued support of the Advocacy & Justine Clinic today. The recipients are:

  • Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP
  • Crowell & Moring LLP
  • Federal Government Pro Bono Program
  • Miller & Chevalier Chartered
  • Sidley Austin LLP
  • Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP
  • Steptoe & Johnson LLP
  • Wiley
  • Winston & Strawn

The Advocacy & Justice Clinic’s 30th Anniversary Celebration will also feature a keynote presentation by Mara Cherkasky, a renowned historian and expert on D.C.'s racial history. Cherkasky will illuminate the role of race in shaping the city's housing landscape with her work on racially restrictive covenants and her Mapping Segregation DC project.
